Faculty Spotlight, Dave Pierson
Dave Pierson: English Department | Chess Team and Club |Shakespeare Club
De La Salle Faculty Member since 2004
David Pierson is a De La Salle staple. He is in his twelfth year of teaching 9th grade English Composition at De La Salle High School. He also moderates the chess club and the Shakespeare club. He is an extremely well-known chess coach and player in the state, and he has brought incredible opportunities to the students of De La Salle. In 2014, Dave arranged a chess match between De La Salle and LSU. Dave founded the Louisiana Scholastic Chess League in 1985 (www.lscl.org). In fact, Dave is so well known in the chess community that Louis Dudousssat and Jean Troendle honored him with the “David Pierson Citywide Scholastic Chess Tournament”.
If you have been to any De La Salle sporting event, you will know Dave as the loudest cheerer in the stands. And, if you have been to a football game you know the cheer he has made a De La Salle standard, “Move! Get Out the Way! We Want a First Down/Touchdown! Go Cavs, Go!” Thank you, Dave!
“Mr. Pierson is a true fixture within our English department. Known for his story-telling prowess, his cameos with La Troupe, and his work with both the Chess Club and the Shakespeare Club, Mr. Pierson is a tireless teacher who spends as much time as anyone on our faculty meeting with students outside of class time, most often instructing students in their writing skills.”
Dave attended Southeastern Louisiana University and earned his B.A. in English. He has also completed graduate work at Southeastern and the University of New Orleans. He also writes fiction, he has finished two books and in August he will be publishing a daily blog called, “Bayou Da Vinci”, about a brilliant but insane English Teacher. Outside of teaching, chess, and writing, Dave also enjoys spending time with his wife and children, both children are alumni of De La Salle.

Parent Letter from the Archdiocese of New Orleans (PDF)
As Catholic educators entrusted with the care of your children, we value each of them and want to support both them and your families as you navigate the serious issues all of us face today. Our lives become more complicated as our children become entranced in media and technology. The many facets of media and technology often influence and become integral parts of the thinking, processing, and decision making of children and young adults. Often decisions are imprudent, potentially harmful, if not dangerous. We see youth making life-altering decisions driven by presentations, apps, and social media rather than by family values, ethical considerations, and the teachings of our faith. Sincere concern for the welfare of the young is the motivation for this correspondence. (click here to read more)
